Today, March 8, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. International Women’s day is celebrated in many ways all over the globe. Its roots are firmly planted the in the works of women’s economic, political and social achievements
The history of how this day came to be is truly amazing and should be known by all. I was lucky enough to have a Woman History Teacher in Middle School, she made it a point for us to study the day and it’s history. What is really interesting is that in my remaining school years no other teachers mentioned it ever.
A wonderful friend sent me this video today of Twitter.. Take a look, as you are watching it, you will want to scream out GIRL POWER! several times, I promise
We do have a reason to celebrate, we have come far but the truth is we still have a long way to go.
- Women are still more than likely to live in poverty then men are.
- Households where Women are the Head of Household still have the lowest family earnings among households where women are not at the Head.
- 58% of older women rely on Social Security for more than half of their incomes
- Women still earn 77 cents for every dollar men earn.
Take a moment and visit the International Women’s Day site to learn about the history, the mission and celebrations all over the
globe.
Happy International Women’s Day!
